The only way to fully rid the emotional connection that art implies, is to fully eradicate it from the city. This is hard for me to say because I do believe that music IS good, but just like everything else, it can be perverted and made bad and cause people to dwell on negative emotions and thus lead to a regression in attitude and production among the people in the city. Therefore, and music that can lead to emotional connection should be removed.
The remaining poetry and art will be purely calculable. This type of poetry is analyzed and has no emotional connection. I believe this type of poetry is necessary to the city because as we discussed earlier in class, one must know images (thought) before one can know forms (intellection). Poetry would be classified in the image category and thus is necessary to help people to higher "forms" of thinking.
Couldn't have said it better myself!
ReplyDeleteI am still not convinced that all poetry with an emotional connotation should be banned from the city. Are we trying to eradicate feelings and have a robotic society? Or do we only want "feel good" music and poetry that pumps up and encourages our citizens to do just as we want them to? I don't believe a human is healthy unless he or she goes through the entire spectrum of emotions during the lifetime. No, it's not good to dwell on the sour (or perpetuate it with like music), but completely removing it in an attempt to make people bottle up their issues seems like a bigger problem than a solution to me. If Obama were to say right now that everything that doesn't encourage productivity is banned, I think people would become emotionless machines and eventually self-corrupt. Though maybe I'm being dramatic because it's 1:30 in the morning.
ReplyDeleteI also am not convinced that all poetry with an emotional connection should be banned from the city. I also don't really see how all of this really realtes to the city. Maybe i'm just really confused.
